Origin of Coffee
in Karnataka, India
Karnataka is the indisputable leader and produces more than 70% of the total coffee in the country.
The first Coffee in India was grown in Chikmagalur District, Karnataka. It was here, that the first coffee plants took root, marking the origin of coffee cultivation in the country.
The tale behind this milestone is truly captivating and adds to the charm of India's early coffee history.
The first coffee variety was introduced in India by an Indian Muslim saint, Baba Budan, who while returning from Mecca carried (smuggled) seven coffee beans, hiding in his beard, from the port of Yemen, and planted them in Chandragiri or Chandradrona Hills, now named after the saint as ‘Baba Budangiri’ in Chikmagalur District.
He carried only seven beans because the number 7 is considered as sacred in Islam.
Baba Budan planted these beans on the slopes of the Chandradrona hills after returning home. Further, systematic cultivation took place, and soon the plantations flourished in and around the Baba Budangiri hills, making it the one of the highest producers of coffee in India.
We proudly say that Kaimara hails from the Land of Coffee. The word ‘Kaimara’ comes from the name of a place. It is a junction which connects Chikmagalur and Baba Budangiri. And this is where our journey to bring you the finest coffee begins.
